I’ve wanted to stay in an Airstream caravan for many years. I love the retro appeal of their sleek silver bullet shape – far more character than your traditional caravan. So when my partner asked me what I wanted for my birthday the answer was easy – a stay in an Airstream.
We didn’t go far, about an hour’s drive from our home. Far enough to feel like a holiday, but close enough to not spend too much time sitting on the motorway. The Airstream was on a quiet campsite, one of a handful of glamping units dotted around the site. It was my kind of campsite, with wild areas and natural pitches.
First impressions were excellent, although when we opened the front door of the Airstream we were reminded how hot it gets inside a tin can!
It was, as expected, compact with a place for everything. The caravan had its own toilet and shower, a small kitchen and a seating area. It even had a wood burner but we had no need for this. You had to be relatively agile to move around the limited space, particularly in the bathroom.

There were a couple of issues. The window frames were on their last legs so it was tricky to open and close these. Plus the cooker only partially worked. Additionally the gas ran out part way through cooking (re-heating) our meal and then it took a while to get this resolved.
However, the bed was surprisingly comfortable. Getting in and out was an obstacle course, but I had an excellent night’s sleep. I did have a couple of close encounters with spiders who felt the bedroom area belonged to them, but we came to a mutual agreement about this. As in, they were relocated outside!

The area surrounding the campsite was fantastic for walking. There was a wood nearby which we explored both days, and on our second day we undertook a much longer walk, with an excellent stop at a tiny French bakery. We were very lucky with the spring weather.

Overall it was a good experience and I’m very happy to have finally stayed in an Airstream. That said, this particular Airstream would benefit from a little TLC and a good clean/spider removal!
